Centro Pavarotti - San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala

During the Mayan genocide in the late 20th century, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Rigoberta Menchú Tum rose as a powerful advocate for human dignity, peaceful coexistence (conviencia), cultural diversity, defense of human rights and the right to education. With the money she received from her nobel prize, the acclaimed activist established the Rigoberta Menchú Tum Foundation that now supports Centro Educativo Pavarotti. Located in the Mayan Highlands in Guatemala, the school enrolls children ages 12-16 and is modeled after the Mayan values that have guided Dr. Menchú Tum in her life. These include respect, reciprocity, individual and collective awareness, gratitude, non-violence, and justice. Strongly rooted in these values, students are prepared to be agents of change in their community and the world. Our library will support these students and further promote educational curiosities and exploration. Located in the school, the library will be accessible to students, teachers and community members in support of lifelong learning.
